We All Play a Part

Recently, I was putting together the final touches for the second workshop of a Leadership and Team Performance Program I am delivering. At the same time, I was working on the design of an integrated talent framework. Also at the same time, I was planning the delivery of a Leadership and Culture Development Program.

There is a lot of cross over in these three different projects. All interweaving and touching the other. Whilst I am thinking of an aspect for one it would relate to one of the others or both. Yet the interaction of leadership, team performance, talent and culture can lead to a wonderful outcome or something very different.

If the ‘something very different’ eventuates there are key indicators.

The ‘leadership’ isn’t leadership. Leadership partners with management yet when management takes over we are left with compliance and red tape. Very hard to change anything or find another way of doing something. Or maybe, the ‘leader’ finds it difficult to interact with his/her team members and cannot engage them in the purpose and vision of the team or business.

That can easily lead to a team, and therefore business, not performing. Not recognising the talent or team members with high potential and providing them with opportunities to try new things and grow their capability, also works against us. It also works against them or they simply go somewhere else where they think their talent will be recognised and grown.

Back to culture now. It always comes back to that. There are a number of things which influence culture but the primary culprits are leadership and team performance. They have the greatest impact on organisational performance and outcomes.

Everyone has a part to play, not just the leader. We have a choice. We can put our best foot forward or decide to just toe the line. Just do enough.

How do you play your part? Do you look for opportunities to improve or change? Are you contributing to a wonderful outcome or something very different?
