I’m sure you’ve heard the saying,

‘The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again expecting a different outcome.’

Why do people continue to do the same thing? Why don’t they try something new?

There could be a multitude of answers to these questions. Some people don’t like change. Some people like their comfort zone and that is where they want to stay. Maybe they did try something new once and it didn’t work out so well. Maybe they trusted someone once and that person didn’t do what they said they were going to do. Maybe they received advice a decade ago, it worked and they are sticking with it. Or maybe they received bad advice and they are not going to trust anyone again to provide them with advice about doing something new.

In business, if we don’t try new things, if we don’t innovate we can become obsolete. It does sit in the realms of innovation but it can be something new which doesn’t take very much effort.

It could be introducing a new practice or behaviour when interacting with your clients or customers. It could be a new piece of merchandise which can promote your business in an unusual way.

Of course, we can introduce something new to our business which takes a lot more effort. Think new pieces of innovative machinery or new systems which make the customer experience much more pleasant. Introducing a new way of interacting with your staff can be challenging and take you out of your comfort zone. I won’t lie. This can take more effort than any of the aforementioned items but you will reap dividends if you try something new.

Let’s look at a special type of business. The business of the celebrity. Madonna, the singer for those who don’t remember her, was renowned for reinventing herself regularly. She was always trying something new and this provided her with longevity over three decades.

Are you trying something new to provide your business with longevity or are you doing the same old same old?
