Are You Really Being You?

Leaders are always being watched. Their every move and word. Every decision. Constantly being reviewed, critiqued and dissected.

Our political leaders are subject to this constant viewing. Their every word and action is being watched and recorded. There is no escaping if you say one thing one day and something completely opposite the next day. Or years down the track. Whether they are staying true to their values and doing what they said they would do comes up for discussion a great deal.

Since Trump was elected there has been a lot written about the uncertainty of what he will do. However, there have been some constants. There is a pattern in some of Trump’s statements. ‘Nobody respects…more than me.’ ‘Nobody loves…more than me.’ He has made a number of statements in this style about a variety of issues. For us the viewer, the question is ‘do I believe him and do his actions show he respects this or loves that more than any other person?’ ‘Is he genuine?’ Our consequent views on this are fairly minimal unless of course you are directly affected by Trump’s words and actions.

Within our businesses our leaders are also being watched every day. Their words and actions are under constant review. If we work for a leader who is constantly changing their mind, telling us one thing one day and then changing it the next we will be in a constant state of uncertainty. This has dire consequences on productivity. If their actions aren’t in line with their words our trust for our leaders will be under stress. If we don’t believe our leaders and don’t think they are being honest with us it is very hard to motivate ourselves to go the extra mile for them. We want our leaders to be genuine and be themselves.

If you are a leader are you being consistent in your behaviour? Are you being honest with your employees? Are you being who you really are and living by your values? If you aren’t what is the consequence?

Is now the time to find out?
