Networking... Ugh! or Yay!
Depending on who you are your response to networking will vary. Some people find it quite easy. Others feel very uncomfortable.
The ones who really excel at networking are talking to all and sundry. Those not so enamoured of the event are often off to
the side of the group or have taken a seat at a table waiting for the formal part of the event to begin.
The conundrum is, whether we like it or not, networking is part of being in business. We have to talk to other people to let
them know about our business, its products and services. Business doesn’t always just walk through the door.
Networking can be attending events with large numbers of people. This form of networking seems to be the hardest for the majority of people.
It’s okay if you know someone at the event but you aren’t there to talk to only those you know. Some great networkers give tips for attending these events.
Get there early, leave late, give yourself a timeframe for how long you will speak with people. Believe it or not, some of these actually do make it
easier to meet people.
The other form of networking is the one to one catch up. This one should be easier considering you both have agreed to meet. At least you want to talk to each other.
That is the other difficulty around networking. The perceptions. You don’t have to do business with everyone you meet. And if you do find yourself in the
position where you are being sold to, it’s okay to say no. The benefit of networking is that the service or product being pitched to you may not be
appropriate for you but it may be helpful to someone else you know.
So the next time you ‘have’ to attend a networking event don’t worry about having to fend off all these people selling you something you don’t want.
Just be prepared to enjoy the event.
And remember – successful businesses are built on successful relationships inside and outside your business. We need each other to succeed.
