How Informed Is Your View?
The recent events in Christchurch have led to other interesting events, all open to debate. It has also provided wonderful examples of exceptional leadership and courage.
We all see the world through our own unique lens. We have beliefs about, and views on, anything that matters to us. Sometimes, though, our beliefs and views may be limited due to the information we do or don’t have.
On Sunday, I saw a post on Facebook which I was tempted to comment on. I very rarely comment on posts on Facebook and normally don’t get involved in debates on Facebook. I nearly made an exception that day but decided to put the words into this article.
The post related to the recent egging of Senator Fraser Anning. Some agreed with Anning’s actions, others did not. Some supported Egg Boy, and others did not. Putting aside whoever’s point of view you agree with, both Anning and Egg Boy committed an assault of some kind. There are many politicians who have been egged. Have they all retaliated like Anning?
Anning, Egg Boy and all who commented on this post, have a point of view. And yes, it is fine for everyone to have their point of view. However, how many of those points of view are well informed or just informed by information which keeps reinforcing misguided beliefs?
Events like Christchurch and other acts of terrorism, in my humble point of view, have become reality due to views which do not have the whole picture or moulding the information the way we want it. This has been going on for centuries. But that doesn’t make it right.
This lack of a rounded view affects us in everyday life. Just not to the same scale as recent events. But maybe it could. How well informed is your view and what are the consequences of not having a full understanding?
In closing, the actions of the minority do not represent the beliefs of the majority.
